Don’t get me wrong. There are some real advantages around the Cloud environment but it’s not a magic pill. Some of the benefits that the Cloud provides include a smaller footprint, On-Demand applications, and an owner-managed collaborative environment. However, without considering your existing information challenges, those benefits will never be fully realized.
If your information is in shambles and it is very painful and time-consuming to find it, moving to the cloud environment will not fix the usability of your information. Sadly, you will still need to go through a reclamation exercise with your current information. This effort all begins with proper discovery and planning to determine your principles and key concepts so that you can achieve your company’s vision around the usability of information. After this assessment, then you can determine the necessary Cloud architecture e.g. information that resides on premise vs. cloud-based or both. Keep this in mind, if accessing your company’s information is currently not meeting the daily demands, then moving to the Cloud environment may only compound the frustrations.
Before your company moves to the Cloud environment, the best recommendation we can give to you is: Utilize a fresh set of eyes that is well respected for both the knowledge of your business and its applications. Knowledge of applications is not focused on how to deploy applications but rather on how to adapt the applications and associated work processes to take advantage of the Cloud technology.
